Pre-moving Guide

8 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Prepare an inventory of all your household items, room by room. This inventory is the basis in determining the most accurate estimate for your move.
  • Contact your moving consultant to discuss the costs associated with packing services, moving services, unpacking services, materials, insurance and other related expenses. Reserve your move date.
  • Determine other moving expenses such as home deposit, airline tickets, lodging, pet care, telephone card or vehicle rental. 

7 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Contact post office with change of address and pick up change of address cards.
  • Contact banks and credit card companies with change of address.
  • Contact insurance company to transfer real estate, health, life and automobile policies with change of address.
  • Contact schools to transfer medical records and transcripts.

6 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Contact utilities and other service providers with change of address: 
    Telephone , Electric/Gas , Cable , Water , Internet , Alarm.
  • Contact business associates, employer, family and friends with change of address.
  • Prepare a box of Items of Extraordinary Value that you will pack and carry with you. These items include family heirlooms, jewelry, stock certificates, wills, real estate papers, back up disk of computer files, collectibles or any other items that you may determine to be irreplaceable. Label "Do Not Move" and consolidate in one area.
  • Create a floor plan of new home, identifying layout of rooms and placement of furniture. 

5 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Begin packing non-essential items. Label all boxes and consolidate in one area, separated by room destination.
  • Contact your local Environmental Protection Agency to learn how to properly dispose of flammable items such as paint, thinners, solvents, oils, varnishes, gas and poisons such as weed killers.
  • Contact carpet cleaners and other contractors for new home maintenance.
  • Register children in new schools.

4 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Continue packing. Review inventory of boxes, insuring you have adequate materials.
  • Begin removing affixed items such as drapery, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, mirrors, artwork and air conditioners.
  • Arrange for a baby sitter and pet sitter for move day.

3 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Continue packing.
  • Return leased equipment or leased furniture.
  • Pick up items that are being cleaned,stored or repaired such as drycleaning,carpets,watches or vaccums.

2 Weeks Prior to the Move

  • Finalize packing.
  • Confirm disconnections and reconnections of utility services at origin and destination addresses.
  • Contract with service providers to disconnect appliances, entertainment centers, aquariums, computers, grandfather clocks and waterbeds.
  • Check your vehicle for gas, oil, tire pressure, emergency kit, wiper fluid, maps and other travel related concerns.
  • Consolidate your plants in one area. Carry them with you or give them away.
  • Plan meals that will utilize the food in your refrigerator.
  • Prepare an Essentials Box that you will pack and carry with you. Label "Do Not Move" and consolidate on one area.
  • Drain gas and oil from snow blowers,snowmobiles,power tools,lawnmowers and other garden tools.

1 Week Prior to the Move

  • Confirm date, time, final payment and new telephone numbers with your move consultant.
  • Confirm travel arrangements such as airline reservations, lodging and vehicle rental.
  • Completely drain and thoroughly dry freezers,refrigerators,dishwashers,washing machines and aquariums.

 Moving Day

  • Arrange to be present when movers arrive. If you are authorizing another adult to act as your agent, please notify your moving consultant.
  • Clear access areas, parking spaces, driveways, walkways and stairs of leaves, snow, ice and other debris.
  • Review all paperwork with movers, including destination address. Provide directions and telephone numbers.
  • Review inventory sheets with movers. Each item will be tagged with an identifying number and a detailed description of the condition of the item will be noted (Interstate and storage customers only).
  • At the completion of the loading,walk through the home for final inspection of the premises.

Move-In Day

  • Arrange to be present when movers arrive. If you are authorizing another adult to act as your agent, please notify your moving consultant.
  • Make payment of final balance due.
  • Review with the movers the floor plan of your new house and the placement of household items.
  • Confirm receipt of all household items by checking them against the inventory (Interstate and storage customers only).
  • Sign bill of lading confirming receipt of household items.
